“Why Practical Pathways Exists”

Practical Pathways was created to give young people meaningful, hands‑on learning that builds confidence, pride, and real‑world skills. Our mission is simple: to give young people the chance to discover their strengths, build practical skills, and take pride in what they can achieve. By bringing a fully equipped mobile workshop directly to the site, we remove barriers and open doors — helping students move confidently toward apprenticeships, further education, and the world of work.

After years in school leadership and technical teaching, I saw how many students thrive when they can experience their learning rather than sit behind a desk. Conversations with colleagues in special schools and alternative provisions made it clear that there was a significant gap for learners who are less academic but eager to work with their hands and explore a trade. Practical Pathways fills that exact gap.

“About the Founder and Instructor”

Practical Pathways was founded on over three decades of robust engineering expertise and senior educational leadership. My career began with 12 years of service in the Royal Navy as a mechanical and electrical engineer, establishing a foundational respect for precision, technical problem-solving, and workshop discipline. Following my military service, I spent four years running a successful business as a self-employed electrician, cementing my hands-on trade experience.

Driven by a desire to teach, I earned my Bachelor of Education (BEd) from Plymouth Marjon University. I then dedicated the next phase of my career to the primary education sector, including seven successful years serving as a Headteacher. Currently finishing my fourth year as a secondary school teacher, I specialise in delivering SEG Level 1 Automotive Studies and Design and Technology.

I realised that everything I’d done — leadership, engineering, teaching — could be combined to create something unique. If students couldn’t get to the workshop, I would take the workshop to them. This mobile workshop bridges the gap between standard academia and real-world skills, offering schools a highly structured, expert-led alternative provision that unlocks every student's full potential.

“What We Deliver”

Practical Pathways provides a turnkey vocational solution with no setup costs, no staffing burden, and no need for permanent workshop facilities. We operate flexibly across multiple educational sectors:

  • Primary Education Phase: Introducing foundational engineering concepts through interactive, safe, tabletop STEM challenges designed to develop fine motor skills and early technical curiosity.

  • Secondary Education Phase: Engaging older students with hands-on mechanical practicals, robust workshop discipline, and modules mapped directly to recognised SEG Entry Level and Level 1 qualification criteria.

  • Elective Home Education (EHE): Delivering dedicated community sessions for home-educated children, offering them access to structured, professional-grade engineering tools and instruction.

Every on-site session includes:

  • A fully equipped mobile workshop with all specialist tools and materials.

  • Structured lessons taught by a qualified former Headteacher and current D&T teacher.

  • Complete assessment, evidence gathering, and qualification administration for SEG pathways.

  • Structured, calm routines tailored specifically for alternative provision, SEN, and SEMH needs.
